Day 7 PAIR Mendocino Art Center
Today completes my first week here. Last night I woke up at 2am and couldn’t get back to sleep so I crept towards the dark studios and finished carving my first New Classic Pot made during my time here. I went back to bed at 4pm. A new record for carving, although i’m sure I will have to clean it up a bit. I am feeling sleep deprived and don’t feel like I should make any big decisions today. I brought some creatures to the kiln shed to prepare them for glazing, but not sure if I will get anything done today. Feeling stressed.
Working in clay, you have to plan ahead. You plan for drying, glazing and getting into a firing. All within a slim window of time. A month isn’t very long. Because of this I have been thinking about how I will spend the last two weeks here. One thing I haven’t mentioned is the state of the art center when I arrived. The center laid off a lot of people before I arrived due to financial hardship. It is a place of transformation at the moment. The new dept head of ceramics has been very welcoming and helpful. I’m glad he’s here.
Some ideas (in order )
Create a series of nautical heads informed by the wild life here on the coast
Play around with water etching on large amphora
Sloth and Narwhal realistic sculpture
Roll around in the sand and do nothing
Cry into soup
Below is a picture of some work I am trying to dry in the winter sun. As you can see, its not going so good. :)
