Day 4: Feb PAIR Mendocino Art Center 2023

Today is my forth day here, staying at the MAC. In the past few days I have met a few of the other residents, hiked, and started three projects. I visited Princess Seafood and I hope you have to the chance to check them out!

I had the pleasure of being in the studio during a youth class and the kids here were making amazing work! Meet Patricia, a large egg like head with beautiful lips.

Project 1: Porcelain Gua Sha stones pressed from Mendocino coast rocks and plants.( Greenware pictured below. ) I have always worked with my hands, the physical nature of my work has lead to me seeking out massage and routines of self care. The Gua Sha stones are amazing for face and body massage. I plan to wood/soda fire these pieces. The Mendocino coast line is magic, these pieces will massage you with the ghosts of plants, rocks, and drift wood from this region. It occurred to me later that to get these impressions, I massaged the land with porcelain and the energy of my body.

Project 2: Creating King Spirits for the wood/soda fire next weekend. Mixing a few flashing slips

Project 3: Oceanic gods ( working title)

The early stages of King Neptune

I entertained the idea of taking him down to the beach and working on him there but he’s just too fragile. All day today I have been thinking about his crown and decided to sculpt two narwhals swimming in his hair. We will see how it goes. At this stage, he looks like the lead singer of Pantera.

Most days end with a walk down to the headlands to watch the sun sink into the clouds. The day before yesterday there was a big rain storm, we are expecting more rain tonight.
